- TAKING A STATIN?
Don't use it as an excuse to slack off on your diet. Some people gain weight and eat more fat after starting a statin, falsely believing that the pill is mightier than the diet. It isn't.
- HEART- HEALTHY DIET
Eating to protect your heart also helps protect you from diabetes and many cancers. Basic elements of a healthy diet include lots of plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains; modest servings of lean protein, like fish and poultry.
- EASE INTO EXERCISE
No pill can possibly give you the same benefits as regular exercise. And your exercise doesn't have to be daunting. If exercise isn't part of your day, start out with a 5-minute walk each day. Then ease into longer strolls. If walking is painful, try swimming or cycling.
- MEMORIZE THE WARNING SIGNS OF A STROKE
The acronym FAST can help. F: Face drooping. Can the person smile? Is the smile uneven? A: Arm weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? If the person raises both arms, does one drift down? S: Speech difficulty. Is the person's speech slurred? Can they repeat simple sentences you give them? T: Time to call an ambulance. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call an ambulance. Check the time so you know when the symptoms began.
